Layout & Design

Is the layout intuitive and easy to navigate? Is it compatible across all browsers and resolution? Is it aesthetically pleasing?

Ahh, this splashpage gives me the chance to rant about something near and dear to my heart: bad collages. The splashpage collage is really bad. Why? Because you can't just paste a bunch of images you like into one image and think you've made a great collage. A collage needs to not clash with itself, not be too busy, and to have a general flow from one end to another -- this is Basic Design 101. This collage is far too cluttered and elements in one of the component images just distract you from the other components until you're just happy to click out of it into the main page.

The main layout is better, cleaner and a sight for sore eyes. It uses Javascript rollover images for the navigation effect which is surprising given similar effects can be achieved with CSS, but hey, to each his own. S.O.S. is given a prominent link from this site, which is annoying, but not exactly a layout issue.

Clicking on The Story, I'm happy to see that the site retains navigation in the sub pages, although the cut out of Black Lady on the right hand side is a little bit messy around the edges. Again, we have the mouseover image. Design-wise, my other issue is with having all navigation be image mapped or image rollovers -- this greatly disadvantages viewers with slow connections or who, for whatever reason, are unable to see images. If you plan on using images for navigation but are going to go through the trouble of including navigation at the bottom of the page, it's always best to make the footer navigation be textual.

The entire image gallery seems to be down. While this is a visual content issue, the layout should give a visual indicator as to which galleries are down and which are up, rather than forcing us to click and be denied using a Javascript alert. Beyond all else, it's just disingenuous because it makes your site look more active than it is.

Other than that (and that I've never been a huge fan of bright, neon yellow against black backgrounds), the site has a clean layout that should be compatible with most browsers.

Written Content

Is there lots of written information? Are all profiles, back story, and other textual content accurate? Does the site offer fanfiction or other miscellaneous written content?

This site appears to be about/for the English dub of the Sailor Moon series, for those who have little to no experience of the Japanese dub or the Japanese live action series.

Story: There is an inaccuracy with the story. At the end, Queen Serenity does NOT send herself back to the Negaverse with Beryl and the demon creatures, she uses the Imperium Silver Crystal to seal them away, as well as sending her daughter and her friends to the future to finish their lives there, hopefully in peace. She uses all her energy in doing so and dies in the end. This is why Serena was always warned when she used the full power of the Crystal because it could (and did) kill her.

There are no major issues with the profiles on this site with the exceptions of the following:

General: The doll-box stats seem to stop after Sailor Mars' profile. It's as if the webmaster either didn't finish or didn't bother for the rest of the profiles. Either finish 'em or lose 'em...The same for the voice actors/actresses.

Sailor Mercury profile: Where it discusses her being able to solve puzzles that involve the others, it might sound better if phrased something like: 'Rated with an IQ approaching that of a genius, she can generally solve almost any puzzle which faces the Sailor Scouts.' It sounds less...confusing that way.

Luna profile: broach should be spelled brooch in this context. Artemis should also be capitalised.

Tuxedo Mask: He only dated Raye once, not 'a few times' as stated.

Artemis: Renie is misspelled - it should be Rini (it's also misspelled in the Wiseman profile).

Sailor Pluto profile: Consistency issue - if this is for the English dub, the English name should be used, which is Trista, not the Japanese name of Setsuna.

Sailor Saturn: It is not Saturn who is possessed by Mistress 9, it is Hotaru. The reason the other so-called Outer scouts warn the 'inners' off Saturn is because of their belief in her powers to end the earth and their fear that they will somehow cause her to do so, as the body is possessed by the evil entity of Mistress 9. (or something like that ;) )

Jedite/Nephlyte: Should be spelled Jadeite and Nephrite. Mistranslated/spelled by the dubbers.

Alan/Ann: There is little evidence, even in the dub, that Alan and Ann are lovers. They are jealous, sure, but they are all they have to each other, as siblings and descendants of the Makaiju (Doom Tree) so it's understandable.

4 Sisters profile: In Prisma's profile, Diamond and Sapphire are spelled in the Japanese manner (although Sapphire's name in Japanese is not really what is here, it's similar but not the same...). Again, if you're going to have it as the English dub, keep to the English names.

The Starlights: Every single one of them deals with them as the Starlights, not the Sailor Stars. They are originally girls, not boys, and are only posing as boys to find their princess, Kakyuu. As soon as they do, they pretty much seem to stay in their original Sailor Star forms, for the most part.

Visual Content

What kind of visual content is offered? Is it efficiently organized and intuitively accessible? Are all visual media offered legally?

Tellu

Wow, this site sure does advertise a lot of multimedia. I see an image section, a multimedia section with movies and MIDIs, and even WIN files! So imagine how disappointed I was to find out that none of that stuff works. Everything is down while the owner is "working on the new site." Well, first of all, I don't see a new site. Second, why the hell would anyone take down content on one perfectly good site to work on a new one? That just doesn't make sense. Kind of like those people who take down ALL the content on their sites for a week and say the site is on "hiatus" while they're like on vacation or something. How stupid?! What a great way to discourage people from ever visiting your site again.

Alright, alright, I'm done with my rant now. So, the ONLY media working on this entire site is the MIDI section. Oh boy, what an achievement. This person has listed the file names and the file sizes of all the MIDIs here. Basically, completely useless information. You pretty much have to guess what you'll be listening to when you click on something. Sometimes you can figure it out, like "callmyname.mid" must be "Call My Name." But what the heck is "epend.mid" or "sm208.mid"? Oh well, at least there are a lot of MIDIs here...
