Layout & Design

Is the layout intuitive and easy to navigate? Is it compatible across all browsers and resolution? Is it aesthetically pleasing?

Tellu

The first thing that I notice on this site is that the webmaster has fallen into two of the biggest traps for new web designers. She's overused brushes, and used a HUGE main image at the top. Using so many brushes just screams, "I just learned how to use these, and I'm going to put them EVERYWHERE!" Remember: all things in moderation. That includes brushes. Next, we have an enormous main image at the top. It takes up the entirety of my screen, which is set at a 1024x768 resolution. This should be made MUCH smaller.

Another weird trend I've been seeing among new web designers is the use of an iframe in a div-style layout. This layout looks like it should have div layers, not iframes... I think this happens when new designers haven't quite figured out complicated stylesheets, so they stick with easy iframes. Why is this a problem? First of all, it creates a sort of "double scrolling" effect, where you can scroll with the WHOLE page, or you can scroll with just the iframe. And because this iframe is 1500 pixels high (I'm sorry, but that's absolutely ridiculous), you have to scroll down the page to continue scrolling down the iframe. It's a huge pain in the butt for visitors that want to read everything on your pages.

The purple and white are really pretty together, and the image of Usagi and Mamoru looks great with the colors. I don't think that the image of Eternal Sailor Moon matches at ALL, however. It's much too elegant for the casual style of the main picture. The title text is also really hard to read - it looks like someone ran over it, and left tire tread marks. That doesn't match at ALL with either the casual picture, or the classy Eternal Sailor Moon picture. Please, just stick with one motif. I do really like the color of the background, and the way that no image is used there - it's just simple purple. The purple text color also matches nicely.

Navigation here is great! I can barely read the top part of the menu because of brushes, but we've already discussed brushes here. Things are organized coherently, and labelled clearly. Another huge plus is the fact that this person didn't put the 'site' section right at the top of the list on the menu. Man, I hate it when people do that. Hello, your content is more important than your 'link me' page! So I was happy to see that this webmaster did NOT fall victim to that. Woot! Kudos for easy navigation!

Written Content

Is there lots of written information? Are all profiles, back story, and other textual content accurate? Does the site offer fanfiction or other miscellaneous written content?

Viluy

Although the wording is a bit convoluted at times, there are very few mistakes. There is a misplaced semi-colon in the Stars season summary, and also the usage of unawaringly which isn't actually a proper word at all. The webmistress could use something like unwittingly which I believe is what she meant in the first place. Towards the end, crys is misspelled and should be cries.

The story of Michiru and Haruka is completely false, I'm afraid. There was no brother, there was no power transferral, none of that. It's merely a false rumour, nothing else. The meeting of Michiru and Haruka is true, however. The one thing that should be changed in this is that Michelle and Amara are only the English dub names, not the Japanese names. Using them to denote the 'present' is a bit misleading and it should be stated that they are the dub names, rather than different Japanese names for the characters.

Under the Usagi and Mamoru story, millenium is misspelled. This is a constant misspelling throughout the site. Also, there is no such thing as the 'Negaverse'. The Negaverse is strictly an English dub name for the Dark Kingdom. The rest of the character names are slightly inaccurate - if you're going to use the Japanese names for the characters, keep it Japanese for them all. This includes the senshi and the Silver Millennium characters. It's all well and good to say it's the anime version, but if you're going to use the English dub names, then use them, don't intersperse them with the Japanese names unless you specify that that is what you are doing, which isn't the case here.

The show summaries are all confusing in that half the time, the Japanese names are used and elsewhere, the English names. Have it one, or the other, not both in the same paragraph. It's very off-putting to read one name in one sentence, and another in another. It just makes more sense to have it all one way or all the other. (btw, Tuxedo Mask is Tuxedo Kamen in Japanese...)

For the credits, you need to remember that you must credit your information, if you did not work it out yourself. It's also nice to credit as much of the images as you can as well, rather than a blanket cop-out, saying that you've been collecting them for ages. I have been too, but I keep a record (as much as I can) of where I get them from so I can at least say I got images from x, y, and z sites, if not the specifics of it. It's just a bit of a cop-out to me, saying that you don't know or that you don't want to list them. It's only fair you tell people where you get everything from, even the brushes for your site artwork. It just makes people feel better about your site, and more likely to credit YOU for anything they take from YOUR site.

Visual Content

What kind of visual content is offered? Is it efficiently organized and intuitively accessible? Are all visual media offered legally?

Ptilol

*cracks her knuckles and settles into her chair* Alrighty, what are we in for today?

Nice splash image. Pretty to look at.... There's so much stuff here I'm going to have to go section by section.

Information

There's info on almost anything and everything you ever wanted to know. From the story of the Moon Kingdom, the Starlights, and the Villians from all the series and movies to show summaries, character profiles, and episode listings (which include both the Japan and US release dates). There's even tidbits on the relationship between Neptune and Uranus, and Usagi and Mamoru. For some reason, however, the webmaster/mistress interchanges the Japanese and American (read: bastardized) character names. Consistancy would be better. Pick one or the other please.

Media

*pokes around*

Hmm... manga images, anime images, artbooks, attacks and transformations, song lyrics, and music. That's lots of things. The galleries have tiny thumbnails that open into a separate page with small images. The transformation and attack animations are so tiny you almost have to squint to see them.

*removes a Kudo's bar from the box*

The lyrics are the english translations of the songs. Neat, but the Romanji would be nice too. You can also download midi versions of the songs *threatens to remove another Kudo's bar*

What is it with people and midi files? Modernize, get with the times, ya know?

Interactive

Some wallpapers. There's six up so far in both 800x600 and 1024x768, however, the creator needs to spend more time working with whatever graphics program they used and also get some tips on how to make a good wallpaper. To me, they suck. Plain and simple. Too many images and text crammed into one thing without any fading or things.

Umm...ahem...enough of that.... *bows* Gomen na sai, got sidetracked.

Carrying on...

The selection of Buddy Icons and Av's is slightly better. It's lacking in the number of images. I'm not sure what the cutout lines in the 100x100 avs are for. They seem to do more harm than good IMO.

The semi-obligatory Fanart bit. Most of it seems to be pretty well done. A couple, however, look to me like the artist simply traced them from an image. I have the images. They look very familiar.... Some are also done on lined paper. Come on, at least use paper from the school printer or something, sheesh.

*shakes her head and removes another Kudo's bar*

The quiz is semi-useless. Out of nowhere there is a tidbit on learning HTML. Where did that come from?

Site Related

Last but not least, the usual stuff about the site and such. Links, awards, affiliates, contact, about us, guestbook, etc... and Credits. Yay. There's not much to say in regards to this section.

Phew. That was a lot to cover. Don't worry, a partial box of Kudo's is still better than none at all.

Overall

How does the site flow, overall? What are the wholistic impressions the viewer gets from the site?

Eudial

Well, lets see what we got here. Doing an overall site review is very fun and allows to spread my wings out. Alright, let me known that this site will not open when you have Norton Internet Security enabled. I know this, as it wouldn't open for me until I disabled it. Now, to get started.

The splash is fine, however, I must point out that the image should be centered on the screen. Instead, its left aligned. You should consider centering it.

Now, i remember why my Norton is always on...pop ups. >.< Argh, I hope this doesn't happen throughout the site. HELLO, BRUSHES! *shakes hand* I'm Eudial, pleased to meet you. lol. In case you dont know what I'm talking about, the main image is full of brushes. Like...wow...

Well, updates on the left and the navigation is on the right. This layout looks really familiar, but I cant put my finger on it..hmm...it will come back to me sooner or later. The affiliates section is clearly marked on the top right side, and it shows a good number of affilates.

The information is exactly that; a written synapis of the series, the characters, and the episodes. My problem with this...TOO MUCH DETAIL! I've gone over this a lot. [thinks of making a help desk article for this] Its unwise to go into such great detail when discussing the seasons. The reason is because you want to support the franchise. Make people want to buy the stuff. Give them just enough information to tickle their fancy and then stop!

The media section is full of pictures from the manga, anime, artbooks, their attacks and transformations, etc. This is well organized, and such. However, the images (as in the thumbnails) are far too small. I can barely see them unless i click on them individually.

Interactive is pretty nice. Its got some wallpapers and budd icons for you to use. it also shows off a "learn HTML" section. This is good for beginners, and its shows a willingness to help future sites come alive.

Okayz, that is pretty much it. Its a nice site, with a fair amount of detail. Just fix those little issues and you'll be fine.
