Layout & Design

Is the layout intuitive and easy to navigate? Is it compatible across all browsers and resolution? Is it aesthetically pleasing?

Alright! In charge of layout, so I'm just going to get right to it. Well, the splash page is designed well. Hopefully, this will be an indication of good things to come.

Ok, this took a while to load. And I now know why. Everything is pushed together! Its almost difficult to read at first. We got little thumbnails all bunched up with some text links to the side, and the updates on the bottom. The resolution that this person is working with is far too small for all this data. This needs to be designed for 1024 x 768 or higher.

I feel that the main page layout is designed poorly. They are trying to stick as much stuff as they can possibly squeeze. Too much of a good thing can turn bad quickly.

This horribly tight layout is universal, and my complaint is mainly that. The person who created this site has a firm understanding of html. Its just that they don't have a good eye for design.

Written Content

Is there lots of written information? Are all profiles, back story, and other textual content accurate? Does the site offer fanfiction or other miscellaneous written content?

Wow, what can I say, I first have to figure out how to navigate this site considering it isn't working too well for me right now.... lets see here...

Well thankfully this site works in Safari otherwise I would have never know n how to navigate this site. Lets see here... Lets start with the first one in the list which is "Site". I don't know why you would have Site listed first, but you do so lets check it out.

Whereas the "About the Site" section tells me about the history of the "layouts" of the site, I fail to see where it tells me much "history" about this site as it claims it will. Yes you were hosted on Angelfire, Geocities, and whatever, but that doesn't tell me what you did with the site other than a layout. Nice try, but fail.

I am amused by the "blacklist" and I only wish they would have gotten some screencaps of the images saying "I am a thief" that they put up to the direct linker. Damn, we can hope for ridicule in the future. However on a side note I have to say that I am not all that surprised that the direct linker was a freewebs user. Some of you older website owners might remember the days of Angelfire and Geocities being the bandwidth theft hotbeds, but today the times have changed once again and it is now Freewebs that is the bastard free website host that lets these little kids do this. I will say really.... who can blame these kids. It isn't like any other free host is any better these days with all the banner ads and junk that they put all over your sites, but Freewebs does limit these children to 7 pages... what can you do with 7 pages? I can see why they do it, however it doesn't make it any more right and frankly, the freewebs tutorial on building a site ALMOST encourages the practice..... which is just sad in and of itself.

Alright that is enough dwelling in the "Site" section, lets head over to "Info". *crosses fingers for there NOT to be profiles*

Uh yeah, two of these sections should be on the "Site" section. "About Me" and "FAQ" should NOT be in Info. The "Info" section is supposed to be part of the guts of the site, not a place for you to ramble on about yourself or whatever. I highly suggest moving them for organizational reasons.

There is a VERY big problem in the "Naoko" section. You see, this is a common problem of people wanting to put up Naoko's personal mailing address... Naoko doesn't speak English, nor does she really care all that much about her English speaking fans. Writing a letter to somebody who can't read it is not only considering insulting but will pretty much guarantee that your letter will just be thrown out. I wish more people would make it WELL KNOWN on their sites that Naoko does NOT speak English no matter what Cindra might be spewing to everybody about her "secretly speaking it".

I don't understand the point of the "Artbook Information" section other than it just taking up space. And the FAQ led me to a completely different page on *gag* Bravenet.... I don't understand the point of this and frankly I am rather confused all together.....

Japanese Name Info is just as much of a let down as it doesn't give info at all but rather just how to pronounce the names....

I am sitting here in the "Little Known Info" section and the phrase "this is a joke" is running through my head. Since the person says that the page is being "checked for accuracy" this isn't so much "Info" as it is just a web author that ran out of content and put this here. Most of this has already been confirmed as dumb rumors and that is really how this page of "Info" reads.

The Manga Information is about as useful as the Artbook section... and the Mythology reads like a bad horoscope. Lemme get this right, Selene was "said" to have born Endymion 50 daughters according to your Sailor Moon Mythology, yet Tuxedo Kamen apparently WAS a manwhore and actually DID bear 50 daughters with Selene... yeah you might want to check this section for accuracy as well as typographical errors and all around mythological errors... I have counted at least 5 and I haven't even finished the list yet...

I am sure that nobody reading this review would be offended if I skipped the "Profiles" *facepalm*

The Reprint Manga Information could only be more worthless if I actually printed it out... but here is a section that intrigues me and makes me mad all at the same time.

The section is labeled "Story Summaries", and this is what the description says:

"This is a comprehensive summary of each act from all 18 manga books (NA version). This section so far only includes a few acts, but it is currently being updated."

First off, since they are the North American version, they wouldn't be "manga" at all, but rather graphic novels. Secondly, you claim that there is indeed 18 summaries here by your wording yet there are only THREE acts listed. You contradicted yourself in the same category description! Would you make up your mind? I mean really, are there 18 books that are here or are there "only a few"?

You know I think the Zodiac Information is about the only place I have only one gripe about thus far. Whereas the information could go MUCH further, it is alright the way it is. The only suggestion is that maybe the person could point out that the dates for each sign are different from year to year as well as will depend on what location you are in when you are born as well as which hemisphere you live in. Whereas these are minor points, I am an astrology buff so I can't help but be a bit picky. However that is all on me, in the modern day world, the information here would be more than acceptable. Good job on this section.

The rest of the written content on this page would basically continue in me harping on inconsistancies and things that annoy me. Overall I can see that a good amount of work was put into the written content on this site, however it falls short. There is too much contradictory information for it to be considered a good place for information. Whereas there are some good opinions, some sections could be consolidated and others done away with all together. Keep at it web author and I am sure you will go much further. Also, please make sure that your site works in ALL browsers... or at least a few different ones... I am NOT a fan of Safari but that is what I had to use to view your site.

Visual Content

What kind of visual content is offered? Is it efficiently organized and intuitively accessible? Are all visual media offered legally?

Cyprine

Crystal Tokyo contains lots and lots of Art Book and coloured manga scans, divided by Art Book and by character. This is good news. Bad news is the gallery's set-up: the images are linked into new windows by thumbnails, but far too many thumbnails are put into one gallery page, making the gallery load-tim too long. Also, the full-size images are too small and too low quality to be much use.

The site offers rather cute adoptables with sprites from Lycentia. I am actually very impressed by them because the webmaster recycles common images -- video game sprites -- and makes them novel and appealing.

The site offers some fanart as well, which are thumbnailed and credited. Good job!

The site has some freebie multimedia like avatars, buttons and layouts. The avatars are overall not bad, although some of them are illegible. The layouts look cute but I would appreciate being able to see an online preview of the site or at least a full-size screencap, rather than having to download the layout in order to see if I want it.

Some of the wallpapers are pretty cute, others are a little poorly made, and the site does a good job in offering buttons even if they are using pre-made templates. The ID Cards are very cute although I can imagine it would be difficult to write on some of them legibly.

Other multimedia goodies include MIDIs and little puzzles and games.

Overall, Crystal Tokyo offers a wide variety of visual multimedia. It's a little crudely presented (everything that isn't an image... and even some that are are just thrown into the "You" section) but other than that, a lot of effort has obviously been put into this site.
