Layout & Design Is the layout intuitive and easy to navigate? Is it compatible across all browsers and resolution? Is it aesthetically pleasing? |
MimetteYou know, I have been to this site before and I can say that I have always loved the layout here. It is soft on the eyes and it works rather well. Even cooler is that the corner image changes. The main banner image stays the same and only the navigation and main frame change. I absolutely love the colors used in this layout and the brushes that are subtle and not overpowering. And you didn't bother with any horrible hard to read background colors. Background color is white, text is black, and links are blue. You can't ask for much more than that. Good job! |

Written Content Is there lots of written information? Are all profiles, back story, and other textual content accurate? Does the site offer fanfiction or other miscellaneous written content? |
Eudial...clearly a Sera Myu fansite. Cooly. The main page is great for the eyes. All the texts in easily readable, and there is a bold for a notice regarding AOHell...I mean AOL users. ^_^ In regards to the information page, i assumed it was going to be a brief synapsis of the entire series, however, they seem to talk more about Sailor Stars then any other season. This leads to question whether or not this is a Sera Myu fansite, or a Starlights fansite. After some close investigation (going back to the main page) It clearly states that this is a Sailor Stars fansite. hahaha! Eudial had another one of her moments. *falls over* Seramyu section stores a description of the musicals along with cast information on three musicals. The cast information just gives some very generic info about the person, and which characters they have played as. the kanji section, i believe has an error in it. The kanji for "no," I wouldnt write it as "field." It MAY mean that in another context, but clearly not in this case. Instead of "field," i would put " 's " In regards to written content, this site is pretty good. I praise thee. ^_^ Good to see some fairly nice SM sites around.

Visual Content What kind of visual content is offered? Is it efficiently organized and intuitively accessible? Are all visual media offered legally? |
CyprineHmm, seeing as how Sailor Stars is my favourite season, reviewing this site should be fun. Already, the navigation for this site takes some getting used to: the left nav bar changes depending on which section you're in, but if you click on "read", for example, you'll see links to stuff in "image", etc. Basically, I'm not sure what logic is being used for the left nav bar but it's confusing me. However, after some clicking, I do find the image gallery. The good news about the galleries is that they are thumbnailed, and the thumbnails are actual thumbnails, meaning the load-time of the galleries is relatively small (at least compared to pseudo-thumbnailed galleries which load all the actual images but smaller). Also a good thing is that the thumbnails are resizes of the actual images, rather than crops, so I can see the whole image in the thumbnail and decide immediately if I want to bother downloading the actual picture. Unfortunately, the larger images load in the actual window, which forces me to use the back button to get back to the main screen. Taking your viewer away from your site, even to load an image, is usually a bad idea. Also, the galleries are somewhat small, which for the Lights and other "lesser" characters is alright, but for the galleries of the Inners and Outers is unfortunate. Also, the galleries are set up such that you load an entire gallery with several characters at once. If I want pictures of Ami, for example, I have to load the thumbnails for Ami, as well as for Rei, Makoto, Minako and ChibiUsa. If we're going to bother setting up internal anchors within each larger gallery for each character, the webmaster might as well dedicate a separate page for each character. Otherwise, the site does a good job of maintaining its Stars focus. There are no pictures of non-Stars characters. The screencapture gallery is a nice addition to the site, although it's unfortunately minimal, since thumbs from only five episodes are online. Also, the site could be more clear as to what "Text" means, since originally I thought it means captioned screenshots. Also, the "Repeated Sequences" text link actually goes to the thumbnails page. There are some artbook and manga scans, but the really interesting galleries are the Sera Myu and Doujinshi galleries, which contain several rare and decent-quality images. Most likely any viewers coming to Makenai for images will be coming for these two sections. However, it would be better if the doujinshi galleries were thumbnailed rather than text linked. Under the fanworks section, there is a fairly extensive guest fanart section that is quite impressive. While I can't go and verify this, it seems like the fanart is taken with proper credit, since email addresses and websites are given. Unfortunately, some of the fanart gallery's email addresses are set up without the mailto: tag. The webmaster's own fanart is quite lovely and very extensive, and the site also has an original webcomic, called Shooting Star, that is quite entertaining. The media section is also extremely extensive. The site rightly urges viewers to go and buy the CDs before offering mp3 downloads, but the downloads offered are still large in number and are well-credited. There are a few MIDIs available and the site even gives a tutorial of how to embed them into a site. The site offers a monthly episode, from Stars, and seems to be the files that are currently available off of BitTorrent. Video clips from Stars and Sera Myuu are also offered for download, and seem to be properly credited. There's a tiny collection of WAVs, mostly of attacks and such, which is a nice augmentaiton to the site but, since there's little use for WAVs right now, it's not a problem that the selection is so small. Wallpapers and WinAmp skins are pretty much all guest-submitted, which makes the section quite extensive, and the quality of many of them are very nice. There are even KISS dolls available for download from the site. Overall, Makenai has a few navigation issues that make finding media a little bit difficult, but I think it makes up for this flaw by offering a substantial amount of multimedia beyond the usual image gallery and scans, and for that the webmaster should be very proud of themselves. |
