Layout-A nicely done layout that suits the character-Chiba Mamoru.

Navigation-Everything seems to be in order. Under the "Information" link we have lots of information on the many identities of Chiba Mamoru and his relations. Information comes from both Anime and Manga and it says PGSM/SeraMyu coming soon.

I'm glancing at all the links and the information is quite detailed so I'm moving on to the other links beside the "Information" tab.

Reads-More information on why the author chose Chiba Mamoru and some other interesting facts. I like the Fashion...or Not section. Teehee. The author describes the clothes Mamoru wears in the Anime. :snirks: There's lots of good information with screencaps to prove the authors point.

Multimedia is last on the menu. Just as you'd expect...there's screencaps, scans, icons, wallpapers, video/music videos as well as fan art/fiction.

All in all this is a good shrine to Chiba Mamoru. Loaded with information with detailed analysis of different situations from both the Manga as well as the Anime. ^^

I don't see anything bad to say about this site. Everything works like it's suppose to and nothing hurts my eyes. Good job!

Breakdown of site 50/100

Welcome and site Identity 4
-The main graphic is rather cluttered and poor quality images used. The main layout design is good to start with but should flow more with the browser than it does. It just looks cluttered and yet has wasted space.

Navigation 4
-why not have the navigation set up properly rather than having the site reload with the relevant information at the side? It seems more like a supposedly catchy gimmick which has lost the plot somewhere, rather than actually being useful.

Content of Interest 5
-Content overlaps the layout boundaries in Opera, which tends to make me believe it's coded for IE only. Disappointing. Interesting information but formatted poorly. The fact that there are widely spaced points for Mamoru's character wastes space in my opinion that could be used to reduce the scrolling that I have to do. Most of the content seems to be the designer's opinion, rather than fact. Not very interesting opinion either. It's not that I disagree, it's more like I couldn't care less.

Having the same stuff in the manga section as the anime section, just written differently, seems a bit redundant to me. More time could be spent just comparing/contrasting them, rather than commenting again on the content of the series.

A whole section dedicated to opinions? Geez, that's a bit much. It wasn't interesting in the info section, so I fail to see why it would be interesting in it's own section, so I will give it a miss.

Oke, biiiiiiiig problem. Click on the DVD screencaps and they're allllll over the place. Not good. Try checking out your formatting, mate, before you inflict this on meh and having most of the thumbnails focussing on his eyes or other weird parts of the body don't earn you any brownie points with me. I wanna see his face dammit.

Advertising and sponsorship 5
-A lot of links to various places, set out in a fairly organised fashion.

Self-promotion 5
-He seems to be promoting more of himself than the site in the content, tho the links are good ones.

Filler 5
-Too many opinions and not enough facts fill this site, and despite the fancy layout, it seems to be all style and no substance. Really disappointing.

White-space 5
There seems to be a lot of content shoved into a small space and it overlaps the framework of the layout design quite a lot. It seems crowded and doesn't really make me want to read it. The blue sides of the layout are really too much. Is it too much to ask that a layout be flexible, if you're going to have something central like that so that it at least moves with the browser? It's off-putting to have so much wasted space at the sides, when the content is rather squished in.

Other 5
-The site had a lot of potential, even with the badly formatted content, but it was ruined by having too many opinions and not enough factual or interesting content. Mind you, most of the sites are more facts and less opinions but if I wanted an opinion from someone, I would ask them, or hope they had a small and less redundant section for it. It just needs a little more work to bring it up to our high standards. It's cluttered yet has a lot of wasted potential in the unused space.

When I first opened this site, I didn't really know what to expect. I knew that it was a Chiba Mamoru Shrine from the title, but the layout is remarkably simple on first appearance. And for that I give a rousing THANK YOU to the author.

Now lemme dig into the site and see what I find. Most of the information is boring for me, but I am enjoying the Reads section of the site. Insult Land and Mamoru's Many Faces had me giggling with delight and I recommend them to anybody that wants to get a good giggle.

The Multimedia section of the site is no acception. But I HAVE to put this in here. I tried to find the "image policies" for this site, but when I clicked for them, they kept coming up broken. (So please web author, do not get upset with me. I did look and your site is WELL credited by this review.) This DVD screencapture will be going down in my list of moments to laugh about in the future.

I don't want to say much more about this site was it is a great site and I highly recommend you viewing it asap. Chock full of info and goodies, this one easily made the good column.

Aah, shrines. One could say that restricting a webpage to dealing with just one character is like handcuffing the author, but if the depth of the focus is proportianate to the narrowness, something good can come of it. That appears to be the case with By Starlight: A Chiba Mamoru Shrine. Dedicated to the many forms of the one character, it fills a hole left vacant by those who would focus more on the more visible senshi.

I'll be brief on the layout, because it is done by the numbers, neither outstanding in quality nor offensive to the eye in any way. It is above all a functional layout, designed to get you to the content as easily as possible. The one oddity is that on the home page there are no left-side navigation links, only the three main sections. But once you're in them you won't be heading back to the home page much anyway.

Dealing with the content, I'll be Japanese today and start on the right. Multimedia has all the usual stuff, music videos and icons and walls, and the quality I'd say is about average. Of better interest is the fanart section, because there's a nice variety of styles, and it's in this sort of facet that having a shrine instead of a general site can be an advantage. There's also a healthy amount of screencaps, but the problems here are twofold: first, all the thumbnails are on one page, so it takes a good while to load, and second, the thumbnails are croppings, not shrinkings, of the larger picture. Unless you've got an eidetic memory for the series, be prepared for some surprises while viewing this gallery.

The written section of the page comprises two sections: reads and information. Reads is definitely the highlight of this page for me, a two-course meal of facts and opinions, all well-written. There are some fine points discussed here, like the different face-drawing styles of various animators, and the clothes Mamoru wears throughout the series. If you want something a little heavier, there's two nice defenses against people who hate Mamoru or think Seiya would be better for Usagi. Or on the purely factual side, there's a quotes page and a must-read guide to anime conventions (not gathering-in-hotels-type conventions, big-eyes-and-sweatdrops-and-sailor-suits-type conventions)

The final section of information is refreshing, because it actually injects a personal touch into the opinions instead of playing amateur journalist. Check out the relationship section to get some insight into the subtleties of Mamoru's trip through the series. It's a little like seeing a glimpse of what the series would look like if done through Mamoru's eyes instead of (usually) Usagi's.

So in summation, this is a very good site with the author's stamp all over it. Definitely not cookie-cutter. I hope to see the PGSM section created soon and with the same intensity as the rest of the site.
