The Importance of Links and Affiliation

One of the most important parts of a site, no matter how trivial it may seem, is the links/self-promotion section. One of the ways websites get noticed, whether them being new or old, is by putting links on your site. Being an affliate is also a way to getting your site more noticed.

Self-promotion is important because it allows people to aknowledge your website, even without going to other's sites. For example, some people may know of your site if one of your patrons has a banner for your site in their forum's signature.

Important factors of having a good links/self-promotion section are:

  1. Working links
  2. Variety of self-promotion
  3. Affiliations

In order to fully grasp what I mean, I shall describe each one in detail.

1) Working Links

This is very important and I'm very picky about this more then the others. The last thing a visitor wants to see is a site with "dead links" everywhere. Pictures not working, clicking on a link and getting a 404 error, etc. These all qualify as link issues.

Its also important for you to not only have a decent amount of websites to link to, but make sure they are still up and running. One of the most frustrating things for a viewer is to click on a website that you recommend, only to see that the site is down. So, make sure to check up on your links. Make sure these sites still exist.

Next is in regards to 404 errors/broken links on your own site. Its important that if you are aware that a page is not working, be sure to somehow tell the viewer that there is a problem. For example, in your naviagation, lets say your "bios" section is down. Put "under construction" next to the bios link.

2) Variety of Self-Promotion

This is also very important to a site. With self-promotion comes more noticably. Have a decent amount of banners, buttons, and links that are easily seen and easily implimented. Having one or two banners limits your patron's choice, and they may not like the choices that are given.
